The Disney Channel has come out of the closet. This past week they introduced their first lesbian couple. For many watching, it was a non-issue. There was no fanfare, just casual humor and everyone acting as if everything were perfectly normal.
While I’m sure that may be normal for some families, it isn’t for all families. For the LGBT community, this is a big win on a traditionally “traditional family” channel. For others, it’s a big loss.
In families of faith (especially those based on the Bible) where same sex marriage and the gay lifestyle are against scripture and religious teachings, this presents a problem. Some may choose to boycott the show, or even the entire Disney channel.
Ultimately, it’s up to parents to decide what to expose their children to and when. And it’s up the parents to decide what values to instill, regardless of what network executives choose to produce. Parents have an important job and remaining vigilant to stay abreast of the myriad of images their children are exposed to is just one of their many challenges.
For this Christian family, we choose not to watch those shows. What does your family do? Leave me a comment here.
