I’m guessing the Topeka Unified School District administrators would never have expected it.
First they asked First Lady, Michelle Obama, to be their keynote speaker at their combined high school graduation ceremony… and she said “yes.”
Then the subsequent uproar begins. Students organize a protest and begin gathering signatures… more than 1750 last reported!
Now, it’s not because of her politics. Apparently the students don’t want to be upstaged by such a celebrity. Certainly, anyone who’s been in a town where the First Family has visited is well-aware of the security issues surrounding their visit. And having Mrs. Obama speak at the graduation is certain to be at a minimum a mild inconvenience.
But given the usual keynote speaker at a graduation, you’d think someone like Mrs. Obama would be a welcome addition. She’s more likely to hold someone’s attention than, say, last year’s school board president, or someone like that.
Sure, the kids probably should have been involved in selecting the keynote speaker. But, what’s done is done. Is it really necessary to insult the First Lady? Trust me. You probably won’t be happy with ANY graduation speaker. They’re all too long and rarely, if ever, entertaining.
