This one is for all you whiners out there. You know who you are. You’re the ones who say things like:
“I can’t find a job.”
“I don’t have a car.”
“I’m tired.”
“I have a headache, a backache, or a hangnail.”
Any excuse not to work or look for work.
And then there’s this man… James Robertson from the Detroit area. He’s been walking to and from work every day for the last 10 years. Guess what? He hasn’t missed a day! So what, you say? His walks a total of 21 miles round trip daily. Oh, and there’s also a bus ride in there. Overall, his daily commute covers 46 miles a day and eats up 10 hours of his life each and every work day! Go ahead, tell me how bad you have it… don’t bother.
It might be easy for you to say, “well, good for him” or “that’s nice.” But when you really stop to break it down, this man is a testament to what the American can-do spirit is really all about.
It’s Detroit, people. There’s snow. Mounds and mounds of snow to trudge through. And when the snow is coming down… he’s getting wet. Cold and wet, for hours on end.
And if somehow, the icy cold doesn’t melt your heart with admiration and sympathy for this man, think about the logistics of commuting that many hours a day. He leaves his house at 8am to work a 2pm-10pm shift. He gets home around 4am. That leaves less than 4 hours for sleep per night!
And don’t get me started about some of the neighborhoods he has to walk through. Suffice it to say, they aren’t Mayberry.
How bad do you want to work? If you put even half as much effort into finding or keeping a job as James has, you’d be Employee of the Month. Quit whining. Go find a job.
