Sometimes you just have to chalk things up to youth and inexperience. Like when a group of football players (and their coaches!) think it’s ok to do a parody skit of the KKK wearing Klan-style robes.
The school, Wheaton College, has since explained the gravity of the situation to the students (some of them were black) and they have since apologized saying that they “intended to subvert racism, not promote it.”
I’m sure it’s hard for young people today to imagine the sheer horror that the mere sight of people in those get-ups instilled in black people. It’s hard to even imagine the atrocities the KKK inflicted on the black community. But we have to keep trying to impress this upon our youth.
If our children (who are growing into our future leaders) don’t understand what happened in the past, they won’t be able to avoid it in the future. This is why teaching history is so crucial.
