#PrayerShaming is now a “thing”

It takes a special person to turn empathetic offers of “thoughts and prayers” into a condemnation and political statement. And by “special” I mean sick, twisted, evil… pick your word. There’s plenty to choose from.

As strangers offered “thoughts and prayers” via social media to those suffering in the wake of the San Bernardino shooting, gun control advocates took to mocking, and even cussing out, those offering the prayers. Now we have a new phrase and hashtag… #PrayerShaming.

Because it would be impossible for those calling for gun control to believe that prayers could be a comfort to those suffering, right?

Because only Right-wing, card-carrying, NRA, gun zealots would offer prayers, right?

Because those who pray believe that there’s no need for action when you pray, right?

WRONG!

Prayer and action are not mutually exclusive. And just because you haven’t seen the action you WANT to see, doesn’t mean there has been no action.

And speaking of action… to those #PrayerShaming out there… what action EXACTLY do you want to see? What “action” would have stopped today’s shooting (or any of the others for that matter?)

Changing the law doesn’t make criminals behave any better. Murder is already illegal and guns don’t shoot themselves. So let’s hear your proposal to fix this problem. I’m all ears.

In the mean time, the only thing I can see that may have deterred, or at least slowed down, today’s shooting would have been if every person at the meeting had been armed. How’s that for action?

Oh, and by the way, my sincere thoughts and prayers do go out to every person affected in any way by this shooting.
