A top Democrat compared President Donald Trump’s time in the White House to the early days of the Nazi era in Germany, in an interview with CNN.
Rep. Jim Clyburn of South Carolina said America is encountering “incredibly troubling” times.
Clyburn, who represents much of the state’s I-95 corridor, said today’s America is like “what was going on in Germany around 1934.”
“[Like] right after the 1932 elections when Adolf Hitler was elected chancellor,” Clyburn said.
Clyburn said that Trump has similarly sought to “discredit the media [and] disrupt the judicial system.”
He said that as a former history teacher, he knows that Americans “better get a handle on things.”
Host Don Lemon challenged Clyburn’s comparison, warning him that it was quite “stark” and that he would elicit criticism.
Clyburn then appeared to adjust his remarks, saying that “this president would be [Italian authoritarian Benito] Mussolini and [Russian President Vladimir] Putin would be Hitler.”
Clyburn, however is still planning on attending the State of the Union address, according to the Charleston Post & Courier.
