Conservative students at Saint Louis University noticed something was missing in classrooms. There were no American flags.
So the school’s Young Americans for Freedom chapter petitioned the student government association – urging them to remedy the problem.
That’s when things took an unexpected turn.
Their fellow collegians rejected the request, according to an exclusive report from Young America’s Foundation.
One government leader said he had a problem with the “why of it all.”
“Ultimately after talking with a variety of students and thinking over the matter myself, I have decided that I cannot support this project,” Erik Staberg, SGA Facilities and Services Chair told YAF chairman Nick Baker in an email. “While I do have many logistical questions about the feasibility of this project, at the end of the day one of the biggest concerns I have with this project surrounds the why of it all.”
Staberg told YAF that the posting of flags in classrooms lacked a “necessary motive.”
Well, if the youngsters at Saint Louis University are looking for a necessary motive – how about patriotism? How about a reminder that Old Glory is a symbol of freedom and liberty?
“It’s very unfortunate that our peers in positions of power are so adamantly opposed to having the American flag in our classrooms,” Baker told YAF. “The number of students at this university who are ashamed of our flag is very concerning.”
I’d like to believe that there are plenty of liberal students who would agree with their conservative peers that there’s nothing wrong with posting an American flag in a classroom.
“I wouldn’t even call this liberal bias–despite our differences. I think it’s safe to say that most people on both sides of the aisle are proud to pledge allegiance to the flag, as our nation’s uniting symbol of freedom and justice,” Baker said.
If that’s the case, the student government association at Saint Louis University could be dealing with an infestation of Communists.
