The attempted assassination of former President Donald J. Trump at an election rally in Pennsylvania on July 13 has brought to light some shocking details about the alleged assailant, Thomas Matthew Crooks.
FBI Director Christopher Wray revealed to the House Judiciary Committee that Crooks had used a laptop to search for information related to the distance between Lee Harvey Oswald and President John F. Kennedy at the time of Kennedy’s assassination.
This revelation has sparked widespread concern and scrutiny regarding Crooks’ motives and level of preparation leading up to the attempted attack.
According to Wray, Crooks displayed a heightened interest in public figures, but his focus on Trump intensified around July 6, just days before the rally.
The fact that he specifically sought information about an infamous historical assassination raises alarming questions about his intentions and potential influences.
Wray also disclosed that prior to the shooting, Crooks was observed flying a drone in close proximity to the Trump rally location for over two hours.
The drone was recovered from Crooks’ vehicle and had been flying within 200 yards of the stage where Trump was speaking.
It is reported that Crooks may have been live streaming video from the drone, although it remains unclear whether anyone was monitoring this footage.
Notably, no visual media from July 13 was found on the drone, but Wray mentioned that the FBI was able to reconstruct its flight path.
Furthermore, Wray confirmed that three explosive devices were recovered in connection with Crooks: two from his vehicle and one from his family’s residence.
These devices were described as “relatively crude,” indicating a concerning level of intent and preparation on Crooks’ part.
Additionally, a transceiver found under Crooks’ body at a separate location was deemed unlikely to be capable of detonating the devices discovered in his possession.
In another significant development, it was revealed that a five-foot ladder purchased by Crooks on the morning of the shooting could not be located at either the scene or in his vehicle.
This mysterious absence raises further questions about potential elements of his plan or any assistance he may have received.
Despite extensive investigations thus far, Wray stated that no evidence has been found linking Crooks to coconspirators or individuals who may have aided him in plotting against Trump and his supporters.
As this story continues to unfold, it underscores the complexity and gravity of security threats faced by public figures and highlights ongoing challenges for law enforcement agencies tasked with safeguarding political events and high-profile individuals.
