Brittney Griner on Her Emotions During National Anthem: ‘My Country Fought for Me’

WNBA standout Brittney Griner, known for her past protests during the national anthem, recently became emotional during the Star-Spangled Banner at the Olympics.

Following Team USA’s gold medal win in women’s basketball at the Paris Games, Griner was visibly moved during the anthem, shedding tears while standing with her medal.

This emotional display came after a tight victory over France, with Griner showing deep emotion as the anthem played.

However, Griner is now attempting to clarify the reasons behind her emotional display in Paris, according to Fox News.

“My country fought for me to get back,” Griner said, according to Yahoo Sports. “And I was able to bring home gold for my country. There’s just no greater feeling.”

Griner had been convicted of a drug offense after being detained at Moscow Airport, but was later released.

She expressed disbelief that she would return home and participate in the Olympics after her experience in a Russian prison cell.

“And to be here, winning gold, for my country, representing, when my country fought for me so hard to even be standing here,” she said.

U.S. head coach Chery Reeve added that Griner was “grateful” to play for Team USA.

“She was so thankful to be here… I think we all should just keep checking on her because it’s unfathomable what she went through,” Reeve insisted.

Looks like Brittney learned her lesson and realized America really is the greatest country on Earth.
