As the start of the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago approaches, city authorities are intensifying security measures in preparation for expected large-scale protests and demonstrations.
The United Center and McCormick Place will host the event, with increased security measures set to begin at midnight on Friday.
The security perimeter surrounding these locations will include a 15-foot buffer zone encompassing Union Park and Park 578, which are anticipated to be focal points for protest activity.

The restricted area, which includes the CHA parking lot next to Park 578, prohibits the bringing or transporting of several items such as vehicles, carts, large bags, laptops, drones, animals (except service/guide dogs), bicycles, scooters, folding chairs, balloons, coolers, glass containers, metal containers, umbrellas with metal tips, tobacco products, lighters, matches, firearms, ammunition, fireworks, tents and pointed objects like knives.
Failure to comply with these regulations may lead to imprisonment as per the Chicago Police Department.
According to a report by ABC 7 Chicago, the strict measures are aimed at controlling the anticipated large-scale protests during the convention.
One of the planned demonstrations involves thousands of anti-Israel protesters who are expected to gather throughout the week, calling for the U.S. to stop its aid to Israel and put an end to the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
Hatem Abudayyeh, chair of the U.S. Palestinian Community Network, strongly criticized the current administration, stating, “We believe that their administration bears responsibility for this ongoing war and genocide.” Abudayyeh specifically singled out the Democratic Party and Vice President Kamala Harris, referring to her as “Killer Kamala.”
On the other hand, the Israeli American Council has set up its own demonstration for Wednesday to demonstrate solidarity with Israel and draw attention to hostages being held by Hamas.
Aya Shechter, the council’s chief programming officer, stressed their unwavering support for Israel and their message of unity.
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson assured that all protesters are welcome and that their First Amendment rights will be protected. “They don’t have to be concerned about their First Amendment right,” Johnson stated.
However, Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling warned that law enforcement would intervene if protests became destructive, asserting, “We will not allow people to come here and destroy the city.”
In addition, the city anticipates several other rallies and demonstrations taking place throughout the week, including some without official permits.
As officials prepare for a hectic week of protests and public gatherings, the stringent security measures underscore the city’s commitment to handling and mitigating potential disturbances while prioritizing the safety of all participants.
