On Monday, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre attempted to take credit for the “no tax on tips” concept, which Vice President Kamala Harris had recently embraced.
However, Harris was accused of copying former President Donald Trump’s policy after he proposed it earlier in the summer.

Trump highlighted the idea of “no tax on tips” during a speech at the Republican National Convention.
Additionally, Rep. Jim Banks (R-IN) pointed out that Harris cast a vote for the Inflation Reduction Act in 2022, which led to hiring 87,000 new IRS agents responsible for collecting taxes on tips from tipped employees.
However, Harris, recognizing a potentially popular policy and seeking to attract support from unionized culinary workers in Las Vegas, Nevada, simply adopted Trump’s policy.
Jean-Pierre stated on Monday that President Joe Biden also endorsed the “no tax on tips” policy.
When questioned by a reporter about whether the Biden-Harris administration had previously implemented a “no tax on tips” policy during their three-and-a-half years in office, Jean-Pierre struggled to respond before eventually conceding that it was a “new idea.”
She emphasized that Biden and Harris generally backed initiatives to assist the working class and asserted that Republicans did not share this commitment.
The decision for Harris to adopt a policy from someone considered a “threat to democracy” like Trump also generated skepticism.
When pressed again by another reporter about why the president and vice president had not previously addressed “no taxes on tips,” Jean-Pierre mentioned that they had focused on raising the minimum wage, which had faced opposition from Republicans.
“I don’t have a timeline for you,” she finally said, simply repeating that the president supported “no tax on tips.”
