UFC fighter Colby Covington is facing criticism after a video emerged of him putting rapper Lil Pump in a chokehold during a gym session on Saturday.
The clip, which has since gone viral, sparked outrage as fans expressed concern over Covington’s use of a dangerous technique on someone without formal MMA training.
In the footage, Covington tightens his grip around Lil Pump’s neck, causing the rapper to visibly struggle to breathe.
Lil Pump appears to tap out, but mistakenly taps his own chest rather than Covington or the ground, as is typical in MMA.
Covington holds the choke for about 10 more seconds, finally releasing him after the rapper seems to go limp.
Lil Pump, clearly shaken, tries to recover as bystanders rush to assist.
Covington, however, remains indifferent, commenting, “Look at his eyes, bro! He’s out,” pointing out the rapper’s unresponsive state.
As the video circulated online, many fans condemned Covington’s actions, with some calling it reckless and even labeling it “assault.”
A number of viewers argued that Covington, a trained fighter, should have known better, and one user suggested, “He should be demoted in his jiu-jitsu rank and banned from fighting again.”
Despite the backlash, Covington, a former UFC champion, has shown no remorse, treating the incident as a joke.
Fans are now debating the seriousness of his actions, pointing out the potential risks involved and the responsibility fighters have, given their training.
Lil Pump, who has garnered attention for his outspoken political views, has not yet commented on the incident.
Recently, the rapper made headlines for his vocal support of Donald Trump and criticism of public figures, including pop star Taylor Swift.
