A Texas SWAT team used a bomb squad robot to end a standoff with a barricaded gunman at a Days Inn motel in Lubbock, Texas, in a dramatic confrontation that involved both gunfire and technology.
The suspect, 39-year-old Felix Delarosa, had barricaded himself inside a motel room after firing shots at police officers on Wednesday morning, according to KBCD 11.
The situation intensified when Delarosa refused to surrender, despite multiple attempts by negotiators to resolve the standoff peacefully.
As tensions rose, Delarosa began firing at the officers again, prompting the Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office to deploy a unique tactic — a remotely operated police robot.
The robot, typically used for bomb squad operations, was sent into the room as part of an effort to safely subdue the suspect without risking further harm to officers or bystanders. However, Delarosa, desperate to maintain control of the situation, tried to outsmart the machine.
Armed only with a bedsheet, he tossed the fabric over the robot in an attempt to block its view and prevent it from deploying tear gas, which was intended to force him out of the room.
Despite Delarosa’s quick thinking, the robot proved to be more resilient than anticipated. It shook off the makeshift cover and pressed on with its mission.
Unfazed by Delarosa’s efforts to disable it, the robot maneuvered closer to the shattered window of the motel room, where the suspect had taken cover.
Undeterred by Delarosa’s resistance, the robot successfully deployed tear gas into the room. The gas soon filled the confined space, disorienting the suspect.
As the effects of the tear gas set in, Delarosa was forced to crawl out of the window to escape the fumes. However, his attempt to flee was swiftly thwarted.
In a final move, the robot rolled on top of Delarosa, pinning him to the ground. With the suspect immobilized, SWAT officers quickly moved in and brought an end to the nearly two-hour standoff. Delarosa was apprehended without further incident.
Once in custody, Delarosa was transported to University Medical Center for treatment before being taken to the Lubbock County Detention Center. He now faces charges of aggravated assault against a public servant, reflecting the seriousness of the situation. His bond was set at $403,500.
The standoff marks another instance of law enforcement utilizing advanced technology to safely resolve dangerous situations.
