Veterans Defend Tulsi Gabbard as Trump’s DNI Nominee

Donald Trump’s decision to nominate former Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard as the director of national intelligence (DNI) has sparked intense debate across the political spectrum.

Critics, including prominent Democrats and former officials, have branded her as unfit for the role, with some reviving claims that she is a “Russian asset.” However, a wave of support from over 250 veterans has shifted the narrative, offering a robust defense of Gabbard’s qualifications and character.

On Monday, the group American Veterans for Tulsi Gabbard (AVTG) published a letter obtained by Fox News Digital, expressing unequivocal support for Trump’s selection of Gabbard. The letter lauded her “fearless and principled” approach to leadership and praised her military and public service record.

“President Donald Trump’s selection of Tulsi Gabbard reflects a profound recognition of her steadfast dedication to our nation and her unwavering commitment to safeguarding the American people,” the letter states.

The veterans’ group emphasized Gabbard’s personal experience in combat zones and her lifelong commitment to serving the nation. Signatories include notable names like retired Gen. Michael Flynn, former acting Secretary of Defense Chris Miller, and GOP Reps. Eli Crane (AZ) and Brian Mast (FL).

The letter highlighted Gabbard’s distinguished military career, beginning with her decision to enlist in the Army after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. In a notable act of dedication, Gabbard stepped away from her role as a Hawaii state representative to deploy to Iraq as part of a medical unit.

“Instead of using her political status to avoid deployment, Tulsi volunteered to serve in a medical unit in Iraq, directly facing the harsh realities, costs, and traumas of war,” the letter states.

Gabbard’s commitment to service has spanned over two decades, including her time in the Hawaii Army National Guard and later the Army Reserves, where she currently serves as a lieutenant colonel. Her military service, combined with her tenure in the House of Representatives from 2013 to 2021, has earned her respect among many veterans and conservative leaders.

Despite her credentials, Gabbard’s nomination has drawn sharp criticism from figures such as Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), Rep. Abigail Spanberger (D-VA), and former National Security Adviser John Bolton. Critics argue that her foreign policy positions, particularly her past comments on Syria and Russia, make her an unsuitable candidate for a role overseeing the nation’s intelligence operations.

Gabbard’s detractors have frequently labeled her a “Russian asset,” a claim she has vehemently denied. These accusations stem from her criticism of U.S. foreign interventions and her past interactions with Russian officials during her time in Congress.

Gabbard’s political journey has also fueled the controversy surrounding her nomination. Once a Democrat, she grew increasingly critical of the party’s policies and leadership, ultimately leaving to become an independent in 2022. In October, she officially joined the Republican Party, aligning herself with Trump’s political vision.

This shift has positioned her as a polarizing figure, but it has also earned her staunch support from conservative circles. Many view her as a pragmatic and unorthodox leader capable of bridging political divides.

Gabbard is expected to meet with members of the Senate Intelligence Committee and GOP leadership in the coming weeks to garner additional support for her nomination. With her military background and experience in national security issues, she is likely to appeal to some Republican lawmakers despite the controversy surrounding her candidacy.

“Her commitment to service didn’t end in Iraq,” the veterans’ letter notes, pointing to her years of working “shoulder-to-shoulder” with fellow servicemembers and her contributions to national security discussions as a member of the House Armed Services and Foreign Affairs Committees.

Gabbard’s nomination reflects Trump’s penchant for bold and unconventional appointments. While her supporters hail her as a principled and experienced leader, her critics argue that her track record and political affiliations raise significant concerns about her suitability for the role.

The coming weeks will determine whether Gabbard’s military service and bipartisan appeal can overcome the political headwinds. Her supporters, particularly the veterans who have rallied behind her, view her nomination as a testament to her unwavering dedication to the country.
