Iowa Republicans are pushing forward with legislation that could make it a felony to bring children to drag shows, with potential penalties including up to five years in prison and fines ranging from $1,025 to $10,245.
House Study Bill 158 also proposes that businesses could face a $10,000 fine for allowing minors to attend drag performances, including events like “story hours.” For individuals over 18, bringing a minor to such an event could lead to charges of a class “D” felony.
Parents or legal guardians who take their children to drag shows risk civil penalties between $10,000 and $50,000 for each violation. Critics of the bill argue that its language is too broad, potentially criminalizing any transgender person speaking in front of those under 18.
The bill defines a “drag show” as any performance where the performer displays a gender identity different from their gender assigned at birth.
