Leavitt Slams HuffPost Reporter As Left Wing Hack, Over Text Exchange

Karoline Leavitt Spars with Huffington Post Reporter Over Budapest Question

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt blasted a Huffington Post reporter as a “left wing hack” after a terse exchange about a planned meeting between President Trump and Vladimir Putin. She shared a screenshot of the text exchange on X while defending her blunt reply to the reporter’s question. The back-and-forth quickly went viral and set off a media firestorm.

For context, S.V. Dáte of the Huffington Post is not a journalist interested in the facts. He is a left-wing hack who has consistently attacked President Trump for years and constantly bombards my phone with Democrat talking points.Just take a look at @svdate’s feed, it reads like an anti-Trump personal diary. Here is my full response to his “inquiry.”Activists who masquerade as real reporters do a disservice to the profession.

The Huffington Post reporter asked, “Is the President aware of the significance of Budapest? In 1994, Russia promised, in Budapest, not to invade Ukraine if it gave up the nuclear weapons it inherited when the Soviet Union dissolved. Does he not see why Ukraine might object to that site? Who suggested Budapest? Thanks.” That line of questioning framed the location choice as tone-deaf to historical commitments and regional sensitivities. It’s a legitimate context to raise, and the reporter voiced a concern many observers echoed.

Leavitt’s one-line comeback was simple: “Your mom did.” The reply was deliberately cheeky and instantly polarizing. Conservatives saw it as the kind of sharp pushback they want from officials dealing with a combative, partisan press.

Critics in the mainstream press called the exchange unserious and beneath the dignity of the White House. That reaction misses a larger point: this administration’s communications team is embracing a tougher posture because the press often runs activist narratives as reporting. The optics of scolding a reporter for tone can be messy, but the substance of media bias is a standing issue.

There is also real substance behind the Budapest concern. The 1994 Budapest Memorandum did involve security assurances tied to Ukraine surrendering Soviet-era nuclear weapons, and that history shapes how many view a high-profile meeting location. Questions about symbolism and precedent are valid for any administration hosting talks with Vladimir Putin.

Still, the way those questions get asked matters when a reporter repeatedly functions as an amplifier for partisan talking points. Leavitt’s post accused S.V. Dáte of flooding her phone with Democrat lines and of attacking President Trump consistently, which reflects a persistent complaint from Republicans about press behavior. When journalists trade objectivity for advocacy, the people answering for an administration get defensive.

Editor’s Note: The Schumer Shutdown is here. Rather than put the American people first, Chuck Schumer and the radical Democrats forced a government shutdown for healthcare for illegals. They own this.

The episode is a snapshot of a much bigger battle over tone, trust, and who counts as a legitimate reporter. For supporters, Leavitt’s blunt style is refreshingly direct and a corrective to perceived media hostility. For opponents, it’s further proof that the White House is comfortable lowering the guard in public exchanges with journalists.
