California Fraud Probe Intensifies, Noem Targets Newsom Networks

Federal investigators are turning a bright light on California fraud allegations after DHS Secretary Kristi Noem and President Trump signaled investigations, and the talk has already provoked sharp responses from Governor Gavin Newsom even as long-standing problems and shocking dollar figures linger in the background.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem told reporters her team is digging into widespread fraud tied to public benefit programs, and she made clear investigators are following leads beyond a single state. That comes after a national uproar around massive fraud in Minnesota and a public announcement from President Trump that put California squarely in the crosshairs.

Homeland Security Investigations is an incredible team of individuals who go after human traffickers, sex traffickers. But the fraud that we have in our public programs that are tied to California, absolutely. We’re going to come to you, Governor [Gavin] Newsom, and we’re going to arrest every single individual that has ties to this ceiling of taxpayer dollars, and we will hold them accountable.

President Trump made the probe public on Truth Social with a short, direct post: “The Fraud Investigation of California has begun,” and he urged attention to the matter. That public declaration turned what might have been an internal look into a full-blown political confrontation between the federal government and California’s leadership.

Newsom’s team pushed back loudly, with a statement that included this line in full: “”Donald Trump is a deranged, habitual liar whose relationship with reality ended years ago,” Newsom’s office wrote in a statement to ABC News. “This is not complicated. He spends his days posting whatever garbage his shriveled little brain can cough up — and Fox News dutifully treats it like the Lord’s scripture.”

Republicans will see that response as deflection. California’s governor can denounce the messenger all he wants, but the allegations are anchored by hard numbers and documented failures that deserve scrutiny, not sneering dismissals from the statehouse.

The sharpest figures are difficult to ignore: California’s Employment Development Department admitted to losing $55 billion in fraudulent unemployment payments during the COVID-19 pandemic. Auditors also flagged that the state received 21 percent of all federal unemployment money despite having about 12 percent of the nation’s population, a disparity ripe for deeper inquiry.

Those are not rumors; they are audit findings and reported admissions that point to systemic gaps. When federal investigators chase networks, they look for patterns, payment trails, and people exploiting program weaknesses for profit or gain, and California’s history presents a lot of material to examine.

The fraud story stretches beyond unemployment checks. Community colleges reportedly saw fake student accounts, with bots and AI used to siphon millions in financial aid across years, and investigators say such schemes show how modern technology can turbocharge old fraud methods. That kind of exploitation drains local pockets and federal coffers alike, and it undermines trust in genuine aid programs.

Worse, the governor’s own orbit has had high-profile legal trouble: Newsom’s former chief of staff faces 23 federal counts tied to alleged misuse of funds, accused of diverting hundreds of thousands of dollars for luxury expenses. Even isolated incidents like that raise questions about oversight at the top levels of state administration.

Washington investigators will not accept rhetorical posturing or viral replies as answers. If Homeland Security Investigations follows the leads Noem described, agents will pursue financial records, international connections, and networks that fed off lax controls. The work will be methodical, and it will likely uncover uncomfortable facts that a few slogans won’t erase.

For conservatives watching this unfold, the issue is straightforward: protect taxpayers, enforce the law, and hold bad actors accountable regardless of political theater. As the federal probe advances, officials should be transparent about findings and remedies, and Californians deserve a clear accounting of how public programs were compromised and what will change to stop it.
