Radical Anti-ICE Agitators Storm Minneapolis Hotel, Drive Off Police

Editor’s Note: This is a developing story and will be updated as new information becomes available

The scene in downtown Minneapolis turned violent when a group identified with anti-ICE activism forced entry into The Depot Minneapolis, a hotel where federal law enforcement personnel were believed to be staying. Witnesses and video show a coordinated mob smashing through doors and throwing projectiles across the lobby, turning a public space into a chaotic confrontation. Local officers who responded were driven back and eventually retreated to their vehicles after being overwhelmed by the crowd. Authorities abandoned the immediate area amid continuing disorder.

The group behaved like a paramilitary protest unit, moving together and making clear efforts to disrupt and intimidate. Once inside the lobby, participants broke glass and hurled objects at hotel staff and property, and repeatedly spray painted “f*** ICE” on windows. That slogan appeared across multiple panes, a blunt signal of the group’s intent and ideology. The damage and aggressive posture made it unsafe for hotel guests and employees.

Video from the scene captured officers in riot gear trying to establish control, only to be pushed back by people throwing bottles and other items. Law enforcement vehicles were surrounded, and one squad car ended up encircled by a crowd that would not disperse. Officers ultimately withdrew to avoid further injury, leaving the immediate perimeter unsecured. The withdrawal allowed the agitators to continue their actions without immediate consequence from police on the ground.

This is not peaceful protest behavior. The tactics used — forced entry, property destruction, and direct attacks on officers — match the playbook of extremist street movements that aim to erode public order. When police attempted to intervene, they faced sustained harassment and objects thrown from close range. Those actions created a dangerous environment and showed how easily a protest can turn into a lawless melee.

Civic leaders and law enforcement sources say the crowd included a subset known for black bloc tactics, a style that relies on anonymity and group cohesion to carry out disruptive acts. That approach complicates accountability because participants hide their identities while committing crimes. The result is a volatile situation where innocent bystanders and businesses suffer the consequences. Business owners and guests were left shaken and with property damage to deal with after the crowd left.

After the crowd pushed officers back, there was footage of law enforcement regrouping near vehicles while people lingered and taunted them. One clip shows officers boxed in and forced to retreat with the crowd following closely behind. The images underscore a tactical failure to regain control swiftly and safely. The videos circulated widely and became a focal point for criticism of local public safety strategies.

City officials now face hard questions about preparedness and response. Elected leaders must decide whether current tactics and staffing are enough to deter coordinated violent actions, or if new measures are needed to protect federal personnel, hotel guests, and local residents. The event also raises concerns about intelligence sharing between federal and local agencies before high-risk arrivals. Citizens deserve clear answers about why police pulled back while a horde of agitators took over a downtown establishment.

This incident will likely be used as a case study by both defenders of law and order and those who want looser approaches to public safety. From a conservative perspective, the takeaway is straightforward: authorities must hold the line and protect people and property from mob rule. When groups choose violence and intimidation over lawful protest, the state has an obligation to respond decisively to restore safety and accountability.

Investigations are expected to follow, and footage from bystanders and security cameras should help identify individuals responsible for criminal activity. Prosecutors will need to review evidence and pursue charges where appropriate to deter future attacks. Community leaders should also press for better coordination and clearer protocols so officers are not left without options when facing organized, aggressive mobs.
