Tillis Blocks Fed Nominees Over DOJ Probe Into Powell

A fresh clash over the Federal Reserve erupted after the DOJ served subpoenas tied to Jerome Powell, prompting a Senate fight and a sharp social media backlash that underlines growing partisan tension around the central bank.

The Justice Department’s move to subpoena the Federal Reserve has thrust Jerome Powell back into the political spotlight and opened a new front in Washington. Republican leaders and conservative commentators are treating the matter as a test of accountability and institutional boundaries.

Powell pushed back with a direct video statement that struck a cautionary tone about the broader implications. “No one—certainly not the chair of the Federal Reserve—is above the law,” Powell said in a video statement. “But this unprecedented action should be seen in the broader context of the administration’s threats and ongoing pressure.”

Republican Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina made his position plain and immediate. One of those critics is Republican Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina

“I will oppose the confirmation of any nominee for the Fed—including the upcoming Fed Chair vacancy—until this legal matter is fully resolved,” Tillis wrote on X. His statement signals a willingness to use Senate leverage to demand clarity before any new Fed appointments move forward.

Tillis serves on the Senate Banking Committee, the same panel tied to the testimony at the center of the DOJ inquiry. In July, Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (FL-13) formally referred Powell to the Justice Department, alleging perjury in his earlier committee testimony and raising the stakes politically.

The move to delay confirmations landed in the middle of an already active selection process for the Fed’s next leader, which started late last year. Back in November, the Trump administration confirmed interviews for a new Fed Chair were underway

Public reaction ran hot and quick on social platforms, and Tillis did not find much sympathy from critics. “If there were any remaining doubt that America will be a better place after @SenThomTillis is out of office, there should not be none,” wrote Nick Searcy.

Others took aim at the notion of Fed independence itself, arguing the central bank is not a separate branch of government. “There are THREE branches of Government, the FED is not one of them. They have no independence and should be shut down. The only credibility in question is yours,” wrote one X user.

That line of thought echoed through several replies, sharpening the debate over what role the Fed should play in a free republic. “The Fed is not a fourth branch of government,” wrote another.

Some observers noted that Powell’s term is nearly over and questioned whether political pressure will materially change anything. Another pointed out that Powell is a short-timer, anyway, which casts doubt on the Tillis’ assertion this subpoena seeks to “end the independence of the Fed.

“Powell has three more meetings left. If this were coming from Trump, why not just let time do the job?” Carney asked. Powell himself said no one is above the law, not even the Fed Chair, so if he did commit perjury on the stand, he should be held accountable for it.
