President Donald Trump sharply criticized Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar (MN-5) after she spoke out against Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations in Minnesota. His comments landed on social media and quickly became a focal point for conservatives who argue strong enforcement is necessary for public safety.
He posted on Truth Social: “There is 19 Billion Dollars in Minnesota Somalia Fraud,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social. The post went further, naming Omar and calling her a persistent critic of the U.S., and it drew immediate pushback from her allies and vocal support from his base.
In an earlier message, Trump defended ICE and insisted they “is removing some of the most violent criminals in the World from our Country.” He questioned why Minnesota officials would fight federal removal efforts, asking who benefits if violent offenders remain embedded in local communities. “Do they really want murderers and drug dealers to be ensconced in their community?” he asked, and he accused protest movements of being driven by paid agitators and anarchists.
Trump also accused local leaders of deflecting attention from alleged corruption, saying Omar and Gov. Tim Walz “don’t mind because it keeps the focus of attention off the 18 Billion Dollar, Plus, FRAUD, that has taken place in the State!” That charge escalated the confrontation between the White House and Minnesota Democrats and prompted fierce commentary across conservative circles.
Omar drew condemnation after remarks at a St. Paul event where she compared ICE’s tactics to abuses she said happen in Somalia, stating, “The one place where we thought we would never experience this is the U.S. goddamn states.” Her words prompted criticism for their bluntness and sparked a response from the White House rapid response account, which declared, “There is no circumstance in which she should refer to our country in this way.”
The rapid response team added, “It is beyond disrespectful — it is appalling, disgusting, and SICK.” That tone reflected how the exchange had shifted from a policy dispute into a battle over patriotism and rhetoric, with Republicans framing Omar’s comments as an attack on national dignity and Democrats framing Trump’s reaction as over-the-top and punitive.
Omar accused ICE of acting like “a paramilitary force” and said the agency carried out actions without proper legal authority. She claimed that “dozens of U.S. citizens have been taken into custoday and released hour later” and suggested those encounters lacked warrants or adequate legal justification.
