A federal agent was attacked during an enforcement stop in Minnesota, leading to a shooting after the suspect allegedly assaulted the officer with a shovel and others joined the struggle.

A Venezuelan national was shot after officials say he attacked a federal law enforcement officer with a shovel during an enforcement action. The Department of Homeland Security provided the basic details and confirmed agents were involved in a target traffic stop that escalated quickly. Local scenes turned chaotic as the incident unfolded.
According to a DHS statement to Fox News, the Venezuelan national was reportedly subject to a “target traffic stop” by federal agents. The individual allegedly tried to flee in his vehicle, crashed into a parked car, and then ran on foot. An agent chased and caught up with him, at which point things turned violent.
BREAKING: I’m told by four law enforcement sources there has been another ICE involved shooting in Minneapolis tonight. I’m told ICE was making contact with a target who then allegedly assaulted an officer with a shovel or swung a shovel, shots were fired, and the suspect ran…

The apprehended man reportedly began resisting arrest and “violently assault[ed]” the arresting officer, according to the account. Two more people came out of a nearby residence and joined in, armed with a snow shovel and a broom handle. In the struggle the Venezuelan national is said to have grabbed one of those implements and attacked the officer with it.
The officer then fired his weapon and struck the attacker in the leg, a use of force that followed what officials describe as a deadly serious assault on a federal agent. After the shot, the group retreated into the residence and barricaded themselves before being taken into custody. Authorities later confirmed both the officer and the Venezuelan national were hospitalized.
The Department of Homeland Security put blame on local leadership for encouraging opposition to federal enforcement. “This attack on another brave member of law enforcement took place while Minnesota’s top leaders, Governor Walz and Mayor Frey, are actively encouraging an organized resistance to ICE and federal law enforcement officers,” DHS said in a statement.
“Their hateful rhetoric and resistance against men and women who are simply trying to do their jobs must end. Federal law enforcement officers are facing a 1,300% increase in assaults against them as they put their lives on the line to arrest criminals and lawbreakers.”
Those words reflect a larger political argument over how elected officials handle federal immigration enforcement. From a Republican perspective, minimizing or politicizing federal operations puts agents at risk and invites confrontation. Local leaders who cheer on resistance end up complicating public safety and the basic authority of the law.
After the shooting, anti-ICE protestors gathered near the scene and confronted officers, according to reports from the area. Videos and eyewitness accounts described crowd members surrounding the perimeter and creating additional stress for responding teams. Law enforcement used crowd management tactics to control the situation and secure the scene.
Onlookers and activists have made this a highly charged moment, pushing competing narratives about what happened and why. Conservatives point to the attack as proof that support for federal agents matters, while critics of enforcement argue for different policing and immigration priorities. The reality on the ground was a violent confrontation that left a federal officer wounded and hospitalized.
Officials have not released the names of the arrested individuals pending the ongoing investigation and possible charges. Criminal and administrative inquiries will follow to determine the full chain of events and whether procedures were properly followed. Prosecutors will look at the assault, the involvement of additional parties, and the justification for the officer’s response.
In the meantime this case has reignited debate over border policy, local cooperation with federal agencies, and public safety in communities where enforcement actions occur. Republicans argue this incident underlines the need for firm support of federal law enforcement and clear policies that do not encourage interference. The discussion will continue as more facts come out and as officials complete their review.
Community leaders, law enforcement officials, and elected representatives will be watching the investigation closely for the next steps. Any charges filed, and the findings of internal reviews, will shape how similar operations are handled going forward. For now, the focus remains on the wounded officer, the detained suspects, and the political fallout in Minnesota and beyond.
