Travelers are dealing with hours-long TSA lines because Democrats have refused to fund the Department of Homeland Security after funding expired, leaving screening operations stretched thin and national security at risk.
Airports across the country are seeing long queues and frustrated passengers as staffing and resources at screening checkpoints shrink. DHS funding lapsed on Feb. 13, and this week Senate Democrats blocked another bill to restore funding, marking the fourth time they have stood in the way since the shutdown began. That political stalemate has real-world consequences for people trying to get where they need to go.
TSA officers are being asked to do more with less, which means longer wait times, heavier overtime bills, and growing burnout on the front lines. When screening lanes close because of gaps in staffing or budget uncertainty, travelers pay the price in missed flights, delayed business plans, and unsafe crowds in terminals. These are avoidable headaches created by lawmakers who refuse to prioritize functioning security operations.
The hit to morale matters for more than convenience. When agencies operate without steady funding, hiring and training slow, equipment maintenance gets deferred, and surge capacity disappears just when it is needed most. That undermines the public’s trust in the system and forces managers to scramble, shifting resources from long-term security improvements to short-term crisis control.
Thanks to the Democrats' reckless shutdown, security lines at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport are stretching OUT THE DOOR.
The Democrats' political games are making spring break travel a NIGHTMARE as they continue to withhold funding from DHS and refuse to pay our @TSA… https://t.co/R5ODJJnTFF

The Department of Homeland Security covers a wide range of mission-critical responsibilities, from maritime safety to immigration processing to cyber defenses. That includes the U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the U.S. Secret Service, and more. Each of these components depends on predictable funding to keep people safe and respond quickly when disaster or attacks strike.
Republicans have pushed for funding bills that would restore DHS operations, but Democratic opposition has repeatedly stalled those efforts in the Senate. After terror attacks in New York City, Michigan, Virginia, and Texas, Democrat lawmakers should vote to fund these vital agencies. Refusing to provide the money that keeps ports, borders, infrastructure, and airports secure is reckless politics that endangers Americans.
