Security personnel stopped an attacker who struck Temple Israel Synagogue and School in Bloomington Hills, Michigan, and the children there were kept safe as authorities secured the scene.
A vehicle was driven into Temple Israel Synagogue and School around noon before on-site security engaged and neutralized the attacker. Local law enforcement responded swiftly and cleared the building while medical teams treated people exposed to smoke. The incident left the campus shaken but protected thanks to the actions of guards and first responders.
The synagogue’s early childhood center held 140 children at the time, and Temple Israel confirmed those children were safe after the event. Teachers followed emergency procedures to keep kids calm and shield them from danger while staff coordinated reunification with families. Community partners opened their doors to provide shelter and support during the response.
One security guard was injured when the vehicle struck the building, and more than 30 officers were treated at hospitals for smoke inhalation during the clearance, Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard said in a news conference. Fortunately, no children or school staff were reported as physically harmed during the attack. Emergency crews focused on securing the perimeter and checking the facility to make sure the threat was contained.
Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard delivered a stark warning about targeting the local Jewish community and underscored the commitment to protection and accountability. “If you think you can target the Jewish community in this county or anywhere else in this state, you’re wrong,” Bouchard said. “We’re going to not only stand in front of them to protect them; we’re coming for you.”
Law enforcement has not publicly identified the suspect, and reporting indicates the vehicle involved was registered elsewhere. Police confirmed that one suspect was dead at the scene as officers processed the area and collected evidence. Investigators continued to secure video and witness accounts to build a timeline of events and motive.
Temple Israel issued a statement expressing gratitude to the security team, teachers, first responders, and neighbors who helped shelter and feed families after the attack. “As you have no doubt heard, Temple Israel was the victim of a terrorist gunman who was confronted and neutralized by our security personnel who are truly heroes. Our teachers followed their training and kept the children safe and calm.”
“We are deeply and humbly grateful to our teachers, staff, security, law enforcement, and Shenendoah Country Club that welcomed us, fed us, and sheltered our staff, teachers, children, and parents. What incredible neighbors we have. What incredible police force we have.”
Federal authorities described the incident as a targeted act against the Jewish community, and they asked the public to share any footage that could assist the investigation. The investigative team is collecting videos, photos, and statements to piece together the sequence and intent of the attack. Officials emphasized that every piece of evidence could prove important in understanding what happened and preventing future attacks.

Local leaders and law enforcement continued to express resolve and concern as they pursued leads and reviewed footage of the incident. The community response included multiple agencies and local partners who offered immediate care and temporary shelter for families displaced by the emergency. Volunteers and nonprofit groups also mobilized to provide meals, counseling, and logistical support for parents and staff.
President Donald Trump commented on the attack and vowed to ensure a thorough inquiry into the circumstances and motives behind it. Lawmakers and community leaders called for calm and urged cooperation with authorities as investigators worked. Officials stressed that maintaining vigilance and supporting affected families are priorities while the investigation proceeds.
Security professionals at houses of worship and schools have been closely monitoring threats for years, and this incident again highlighted the lifesaving role trained guards can play in an emergency. The response in Bloomington Hills will likely prompt renewed discussion about preventive measures, training investments, and coordination between private security and public police. For now, community leaders and investigators remain focused on supporting those affected and clarifying the facts as they emerge.
