Border Leader Pleads Guilty in Alien Smuggling, Faces 15 Years

An illegal alien pleaded guilty this week after being identified as a leader in a human smuggling ring that moved migrants from Mexico and Central and South America across the Canada–U.S. border for profit, and he now faces federal prison time.

An illegal alien from Mexico pleaded guilty for his role in an international human smuggling conspiracy that illegally brought aliens from Mexico and Central and South America across the northern border with Canada into the United States for profit. The defendant, identified in court records as Edgar Sanchez-Solis, 24, admitted leadership activity while living illegally in Kansas City, Missouri.

The smuggling organization moved hundreds of people into the United States and relied on drivers to ferry them deeper inland after crossing the border. During one May 2023 smuggling event, a van carrying aliens triggered a high-speed chase with U.S. Border Patrol that had to be halted due to public safety concerns until local law enforcement used a tire deflation device to stop the vehicle.

Sanchez-Solis pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit alien smuggling and five counts of alien smuggling for commercial advantage and private financial gain. He is scheduled to be sentenced on Sept. 10 and faces a statutory range of a minimum of five years and a maximum of 15 years in prison, with the ultimate term set by a federal district judge after consideration of the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines.

The Justice Department named several officials in the announcement, including Assistant Attorney General A. Tysen Duva of the Criminal Division and First Assistant U.S. Attorney John A. Sarcone III for the Northern District of New York. Special Agent in Charge Erin Keegan of the Homeland Security Investigations Buffalo Field Office was also cited as making the announcement alongside prosecutors handling the case.

HSI Rouses Point and U.S. Border Patrol Burke Station led the investigation, backed by HSI’s Human Smuggling Unit in Washington, D.C., and CBP’s National Targeting Center International Interdiction Task Force. Trial Attorney Spencer M. Perry of the Criminal Division’s Human Rights and Special Prosecutions Section and Assistant U.S. Attorney Carling Dunham for the Northern District of New York are prosecuting the matter in federal court.

The indictment and investigation received support from Joint Task Force Alpha, the Department’s primary effort against high-impact human smuggling and trafficking committed by cartels and Transnational Criminal Organizations. JTFA operates as a partnership between the Department of Justice and the Department of Homeland Security, concentrating resources to pursue leaders and organizers who move people for profit across multiple borders.

JTFA’s network of detailees and partners spans districts and agencies, including the Money Laundering, Narcotics and Forfeiture Section, the Office of International Affairs, and multiple U.S. Attorney’s Offices across the country. According to the Department, JTFA’s work has produced more than 455 domestic and international arrests, more than 400 U.S. convictions, and more than 345 significant jail sentences, alongside forfeitures of substantial assets tied to smuggling networks.

This prosecution forms part of Operation Take Back America, described by the Justice Department as a nationwide initiative aimed at repelling illegal immigration, dismantling cartels and transnational criminal organizations, and protecting communities from violent crime. Operation Take Back America channels resources from Project Safe Neighborhoods to streamline efforts against high-priority smuggling corridors and the leaders who exploit them.

The facts in this case underline ongoing vulnerabilities along both southern and northern approaches to the United States, and demonstrate coordinated federal action that targets the organizers rather than the victims. From a practical perspective, the case reinforces the need for sustained pressure on the criminal networks profiting from illegal crossings and for continued cooperation across federal and local law enforcement.
