FBI Confirms Ransom Notes Linked To Nancy Guthrie Case

Nancy Guthrie has been missing since February and recent developments around ransom notes have deepened the mystery and raised grim possibilities about her fate. Investigators, media outlets, and a flood of anonymous messages have produced conflicting signals and left many questions unanswered.

Nancy Guthrie, who vanished more than 100 days ago after a reported abduction in early February, remains missing and feared dead by some observers. Reporting has focused on a string of ransom notes sent to media outlets and what those messages might reveal about who took her and where she might be. The coverage has included claims that one note placed her body in Mexico and another that said she was dead.

A series of Nancy Guthrie ransom notes sent to the media after the 84-year-old went missing are believed to be from her actual kidnappers, according to a shocking new report.

The notes, sent within days of Nancy’s Feb. 1 kidnapping, generated countless headlines, capturing the attention of both the public and police — who have been tight-lipped about their authenticity.

But investigators close to the case told CBS News Monday the notes are believed to be genuine, and were sent from the same person or group of people from the same digital IP address.

That could indicate a grim outlook for Nancy’s fate — as one of the notes claimed she’d died and been “buried in nature,” according to ABC News.

Law enforcement sources have confirmed that some of the ransom communications were traced to a consistent digital origin, a detail that adds weight to the possibility the messages came from those involved. Still, officials have been cautious about drawing firm conclusions in public, citing the need to protect investigative avenues. The digital footprint suggests coordination, but it does not by itself prove the claims inside the notes are true.

The Nancy Guthrie ransom note TMZ received was the real deal, according to the FBI, but contrary to new reports, it did not contain an apology or a revelation she was dead.

There is something else … TMZ received close to a dozen emails from a man claiming he knew both the identity of the kidnappers and the location of Nancy. The initial email he sent — just days after the kidnapping — said he would provide information in return for a single bitcoin, but “time is of the essence.” He made it clear — he was not a kidnapper.

Among the conflicting messages, TMZ reported receiving multiple emails from an individual claiming knowledge of both the perpetrators and Nancy’s whereabouts, and that person offered to trade information for a single bitcoin. That detail has complicated the public narrative because it mixes potential leads with what could be opportunistic attempts at profit or hoaxes. The FBI reportedly authenticated certain communications but has avoided full disclosure about what that authentication means for the investigation.

For families and friends, the back-and-forth between media reports and official statements has been exhausting and painful. Each new claim raises hope and then anxiety when it cannot be verified, and the repeated mentions of death and burial in the notes have made the situation especially harrowing. Community members say the uncertainty is as damaging as any confirmed loss.

Cross-border elements mentioned in some notes introduce another layer of complexity, since international searches and cooperation can slow the pace of visible progress. Cases that potentially span borders bring challenges in evidence collection and in coordinating between multiple agencies. That reality makes timely answers less likely, even when investigators are moving behind the scenes.

Investigators have focused on digital forensics and communication trails, looking for verifiable links between senders and suspects, and trying to separate credible leads from noise. The presence of a consistent IP address across messages is notable, but IP information can be masked or faked, so it must be corroborated. Officials are also weighing eyewitness reports and local leads that have not reached the public.

Beyond the technical work, there is a human toll that does not show up in forensic reports: the worry for an elderly missing person, the disruption to routines, and the moral strain on those who keep waiting. Neighbors and local groups have organized searches and shared tips, but without confirmed sightings or recovered evidence the answers remain out of reach. That sustained uncertainty is taking a clear emotional and practical toll.

As the investigation continues, many remain frustrated by conflicting public accounts and the slow pace of usable updates. The mix of media attention, anonymous tips, and selective official disclosures leaves the public with more questions than answers. Right now, the central facts are the disappearance, the ransom communications, and ongoing law enforcement work to determine their meaning.
