Expose Communist Appeal, Reclaim History Before It Returns

This article revisits Dennis Prager’s provocative question about why communism does not carry the same stigma as Nazism, traces how socialist and communist ideas are being repackaged for a new generation, and warns that ignorance of 20th century communist crimes is enabling a dangerous revival.

The Democratic Socialists of America openly point toward communism as a destination, and many activists treat socialism as the acceptable route there. That rebranding has worked in part because younger Americans often lack firsthand memory of what communism delivered: mass poverty, repression, and systematic murder on an industrial scale. Socialism becomes a stepping stone in rhetoric and recruitment, and the consequences are being downplayed or ignored.

That trend is troubling because the Left—its activists, commentators, and campus networks—regularly brands opponents with the harshest labels while softening its stance on communist history. President Trump has been compared to Hitler, Republicans are dubbed Nazis, and government agencies are equated with secret police, yet the ideology that produced tens of millions of deaths is treated with curious leniency. When the political narrative sanitizes the perpetrators, it opens space for dangerous romanticizing.

Why is it that when people want to describe particularly evil individuals or regimes, they use the terms “Nazi” or “Fascist” but almost never “Communist?”
