A grand jury has returned an indictment charging Nick Reiner in the fatal stabbings of his parents in their Brentwood home, and the case is moving toward pretrial hearings with serious special allegations attached.
Nick Reiner has been formally indicted on murder charges after the deaths of Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner last December in Brentwood. The new indictment, unsealed today, alleges the killings were an ambush and lays out both multiple murder and lying-in-wait special circumstances.
The filing says Reiner pleaded not guilty to two counts of murder and faces a special allegation that he personally used a dangerous and deadly weapon, a knife. Prosecutors describe the conduct as involving lying in wait, an allegation that heightens the severity of the charges.

“This was a profound betrayal by someone who was loved and trusted by the very people he is accused of killing,” Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman said. “The indictment unsealed today also adds a special circumstance allegation that the defendant committed the murders by means of lying in wait. We hope that by having a grand jury return an indictment in this case it will bring us one step closer to a trial and achieving justice.”
He is scheduled to return for a pretrial hearing on September 15 in Department 108 of the Foltz Criminal Justice Center. Court papers indicate the indictment itself was returned on July 20, reflecting the grand jury’s formal action.

According to the charges, on Dec. 14, 2025, Reiner allegedly fatally stabbed Rob Reiner, 78, and Michele Singer Reiner, 70, at their home in the 200-block of South Chadbourne Avenue in Brentwood. The complaint says Reiner fled the scene and was arrested later that same evening in Exposition Park.
If convicted as charged, Reiner faces death or life in state prison without the possibility of parole. A decision on whether to seek the death penalty will be made at a later date, leaving the ultimate exposure dependent on prosecutorial choices and trial outcomes.
He is being held on no bail while the case proceeds through the Major Crimes Division of the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. The investigation remains active, with the Los Angeles Police Department’s Robbery-Homicide Division listed as continuing its inquiries.
The charges in the indictment are allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law. The formal grand jury action advances the case toward trial, but it does not resolve contested factual or legal issues that will be litigated in court.
