The NFL fined San Francisco 49ers fullback Kyle Juszczyk $14,926 for an end zone celebration during the team’s Week 2 win over the Miami Dolphins, saying the gesture — which mimicked taking a drink — amounted to an offensive demonstration.
In its letter to Juszczyk, the league wrote: “Your imitation of chugging a beer constituted an offensive demonstration and could reasonably be construed as being in poor taste.”
Juszczyk, whose nickname is “Juice,” has performed the same celebration for years. He has said the gesture is meant to represent drinking juice, not beer, and he had never been fined for it before this incident.
The fine has drawn criticism given the NFL’s own commercial relationship with alcohol. Bud Light is the league’s official beer sponsor, and beer advertising is a fixture at stadiums and during broadcasts across the league.
Critics of the league’s decision argue that the NFL is penalizing a player for a perceived gesture toward a product the league itself heavily markets, while also questioning whether the league misread the celebration in the first place, given Juszczyk’s long-standing nickname and history with the move.
The 49ers and the NFL have not issued further public statements clarifying the discrepancy between the league’s marketing partnerships and its enforcement decision in this case.
