Las Vegas Aces star A’ja Wilson picked up a fourth-quarter technical foul after confronting a spectator during Game Two of the Aces’ first-round playoff series against the Indiana Fever in Indianapolis, a moment that overshadowed a 99-89 Fever victory that evened the series at one game apiece.
With Indiana leading 90-79 late in the fourth quarter, Wilson got tangled up with Fever guard Sophie Cunningham after a physical foul. When Wilson got up, she noticed a fan seated two rows behind the basket pointing and shouting at her. She walked toward the spectator until teammates and officials stepped in to pull her back. Referees issued Wilson a technical foul for leaving the court.
The Fever later said the fan had not broken any arena rules and was not removed from the building.
“Following a report of a comment directed toward a player, arena security spoke with the fan involved and witnesses. Security determined there was no violation of the Fan Code of Conduct, the fan was not removed from the arena. We consider the matter closed,” the team said in a statement.
Wilson stood by her reaction when she spoke with reporters after the game.
“I don’t really get into the bulls—t. I try to play my game. But if I’m just walking and I just got the foul, I’m chilling. If I see a man coming at me, taking steps toward me and pointing at me. I don’t give a damn what you said. I don’t give a damn how you said, the tone. That is unacceptable,” Wilson said. “You don’t step towards me. You should never step and point at me. I’m not for that s—t … that there is unacceptable. They said he didn’t do anything and that’s fine. … There’s certain things I’m not going to allow because it’s unacceptable. You don’t know me at all to step toward me and say anything.”
Aces head coach Becky Hammon said she didn’t see exactly what triggered the confrontation.
“I didn’t exactly see what happened. I only saw the aftermath. I’ve never seen her react like that. Whatever was done, she felt very disrespected in that moment. … Whatever it was, it doesn’t have any place in that arena,” Hammon said.
Asked about the technical foul for leaving the court, Hammon added, “I guess you can’t leave the court.”
A similar episode unfolded when the Aces played a regular-season game in Indiana on Aug. 6. With 4:38 left in the third quarter, Aces guards Jewell Loyd and Jackie Young gestured toward officials and security about fans sitting in the front row at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Two courtside fans left the arena that night, though the Fever later said an investigation found no official violation of the WNBA Fan Code of Conduct and the fans departed voluntarily rather than being ejected. The Aces won that game 86-84 in overtime on a Chelsea Gray buzzer-beater.
In Tuesday’s game, despite the finding that the fan broke no rules, the spectator drew criticism from many fans on social media following the confrontation.
On the court, Caitlin Clark delivered a strong performance for the Fever, finishing with 27 points, 15 assists and seven rebounds. Wilson recorded 22 points and nine rebounds, but her late-game confrontation drew much of the attention after the 99-89 Indiana win, which sends the series back to Las Vegas, Nevada, for Game Three.
