Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf says he believes there is another civilization living inside the Earth, a modern version of the long-debunked Hollow Earth theory.
Metcalf made the comments in a recent interview with The Athletic, saying his quarterback Aaron Rodgers shares his interest in conspiracy theories.
“Yeah, I’m a big conspiracy theorist. Shout out to my quarterback,” Metcalf said. “I think it’s another world. I think there is another civilization inside of Earth.”
Metcalf’s reasoning centers on Antarctica, which he says is difficult to visit compared with other remote regions.
“You can go to Alaska. You could go to the North Pole,” he said. “But why not Antarctica? Why can’t you just book a trip to Antarctica?”
The Athletic noted that Antarctica can, in fact, be visited commercially, with tourism trips running between November and March, mostly by ship. The outlet also acknowledged, however, that there are no commercial airports on the continent and that non-commercial flights are controlled by governments.
Metcalf also raised the idea of world leaders meeting there.
“Why is there a secret meeting — well, it’s not secret,” Metcalf added, “but why is there a meeting between every world leader of every country in Antarctica, specifically?”
The Athletic said there is no verifiable evidence of such meetings, while noting that Antarctica does receive “distinguished visitors” from time to time.
Metcalf made clear that his interest in conspiracy theories predates his relationship with Rodgers, who has previously drawn attention for his own unconventional views.
“Nah, I’ve been on it,” Metcalf said. “But it just so happened that we can bond over it.”
