A lighthearted moment on ESPN’s “SEC Nation” set, broadcasting live from Auburn’s campus, turned tense when former NFL quarterback Chase Daniel compared the Florida Gators to Vanderbilt, prompting fellow analyst Tim Tebow to nearly walk off the set.
Tebow, a Florida alumnus who won the Heisman Trophy and two national championships during his four seasons with the Gators, did not take kindly to Daniel’s remark.
“I do think Florida could be the next Vandy,” Daniel said, drawing smirks from other co-hosts before adding, “Let me just explain something.”
Tebow cut him off before he could finish.
“Chase, you can’t say that. That is the most derogatory thing I have ever heard in my life.”
Daniel went on to clarify that he meant the comparison as a compliment, suggesting Florida could be a surprise team in 2026 the way Vanderbilt was a surprise team last season.
Still, the comparison struck a nerve. For much of the 1990s and 2000s, Vanderbilt was widely regarded as one of the weakest programs in the SEC, often overmatched by Florida and other conference powers during that era.
Tebow appeared to understand Daniel’s intent but pushed back on the specific wording. “I get your point,” he said, covering his face, “but the wording, ‘Florida could be Vandy?'”
The exchange happened as “SEC Nation” covered the matchup between Auburn and Florida, with the two former quarterbacks sharing the set as analysts for the broadcast.
