Texas food banks will soon be distributing more than 7 million free eggs to residents statewide, part of an antitrust settlement Attorney General Ken Paxton announced Tuesday. Roughly 1.7 million eggs have already reached food banks, with another 5.3 million expected to arrive in the coming weeks.
The eggs come from settlements reached in June with three major egg producers — Cal-Maine Foods, Centrum/Versova and Hickman’s Egg Ranch — that resolved antitrust claims brought by the Trump administration’s Department of Justice and a coalition of state attorneys general. The companies were accused of conspiring to inflate egg prices between 2022 and 2025.
Under the settlement terms, the companies agreed to donate more than 7 million eggs to Texas food banks in addition to paying a combined $3.3 million to participating states.
“After securing 7 million eggs for the people of Texas, I am excited to announce that Texans will now have an opportunity to receive cartons of free eggs in communities across the state,” Paxton said. “I will continue to help our families put food on the table and do everything within my power to lower prices and help Texans who are struggling to make ends meet.”
Which food banks are getting eggs
The distribution is being coordinated with Feeding Texas, the state’s largest hunger-relief organization, working with 17 participating food banks across the state.
The Houston Food Bank will receive the largest share, with 1,544,400 eggs. The North Texas Food Bank in Plano and the Tarrant Area Food Bank in Fort Worth will each receive 842,400 eggs.
Other participating food banks are located in Austin, San Antonio, Tyler, Corpus Christi, El Paso, Laredo, Odessa, Pharr, Beaumont, Amarillo, Lubbock, Victoria, Abilene and Wichita Falls.
It is not yet clear when individual food banks will begin handing out the eggs or whether requirements to receive them will differ from one location to another. Feeding Texas has not yet detailed how residents can access the free eggs.
