WWE star Omos, one of the tallest and largest wrestlers on the roster, is set to face Rey Mysterio on Friday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena as part of Night 1 of Triplemania 34, AAA’s marquee wrestling event, in Las Vegas.
Omos hasn’t stepped into a WWE ring in two years, instead building a reputation abroad. He had a short stint with Pro Wrestling Noah in Japan before making his AAA debut at Triplemania 33 last year, where he won the Bardahl Cup and established himself in Mexico’s wrestling scene.
Speaking with OutKick Dropkick ahead of Friday’s match, Omos said his time in Japan helped prepare him for his run with AAA.
“No, not at all. I think, me coming to AAA, I had a chance to go to Japan last year for Pro Wrestling Noah and I think that prepared me for AAA,” he said. “Going out there, experiencing a new culture, speak little-to-no Japanese but being able to immerse myself in that wrestling culture, which is all the same boat. It’s also very unique in its own ways. It was a phenomenal experience so I think that helped me.”
The Las Vegas matchup caps off a feud that has been building for weeks. Omos was suspended from AAA after an outburst directed at Mysterio, who serves as the promotion’s general manager. The tension escalated earlier this month when Omos attended a show as a paying spectator but ended up getting pulled into the action anyway.
Friday’s bout at the MGM Grand gives Omos a chance to win back his spot on the roster. He didn’t hold back when discussing his plans for Mysterio.
“I am excited to hand out the greatest a– whooping of this lifetime to Rey Mysterio. I am thrilled,” Omos said.
Mysterio is widely regarded as one of the greatest stars in WWE history and one of the most accomplished Luchadores in the history of Lucha Libre. Omos said none of that changes his approach heading into the match.
“No, I don’t give a damn. It doesn’t matter, no,” he said. “Not even in the slightest.”
AAA commentator Corey Graves has described the matchup as a modern David and Goliath story, one that Las Vegas fans will get to see play out live at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
