Demario Davis Turns Jets' Win Over Browns Into a Lesson on Perseverance

New York Jets linebacker Demario Davis delivered more than a strong defensive performance Sunday in his team’s 17-12 win over the Cleveland Browns. He also offered a reflection on faith and perseverance that drew on a Bible verse shared at the team’s chapel service the day before.

The victory snapped a three-game losing streak for the Jets and ended a three-game winning streak for the Browns. Davis said the win carried extra weight given what the team had been through.

“I would go as far as to say this was a historic win for this organization,” Davis said. “When you talk about a team that’s coming in that has won three games, that type of momentum in this league is very hard to get and it makes it very strong and feels insurmountable at times.”

He pointed to the Jets’ 0-3 skid leading into the matchup. “And you’re talking about a team that was 0-3 or had lost the last 3 games. And when you’re going through that type of adversity, it can weigh on you. It can weigh on you emotionally. It can weigh on your faith, it can weigh on your belief. And it can weigh on an organization that has historically been disappointed.”

Davis said the chapel service on Saturday featured Proverbs 13:12: “Hope deferred makes the heart sick, But when the desire comes, it is a tree of life.” He connected that verse directly to the team’s win.

“We get the chance to experience that tree of life, which is victorious,” Davis said. “And the reason why that word is so important is because football is the greatest teacher of life. I’ll always say that.”

A message beyond the field

Davis was clear that the lesson wasn’t meant only for football. He said the same struggle shows up in everyday life, whether in relationships, jobs, or family.

“Right now, people are fans of the game and watch the game, but they have life happening,” he said. “It could be a relationship. It could be a job. It could be something going on with the kids. It could be something that’s strange. And when you go through adversity, you want to give up.”

He described the temptation to quit before even trying. “Sometimes you want to give up before you even start – before you even try. Like, I’ve been going through this in my relationship, I don’t even want to try anymore. I’ve been going through this in my job. I just got let go or I don’t know how I’m going to make ends meet. And you just want to give up.”

“God wants you to know that when the enemy wants you to quit, when he’s making your heart sick, when you’re going through hard times, man, if you just get to the other side, it’s a tree of life,” Davis said.

Davis said perseverance, paired with faith, can open a path forward. “God can work a miracle. Or he can give you medicine. And that medicine might be counseling a relationship. It might be just keep showing up at your job doing the right thing. You’re going to get seen. That promotion is on the way.”

He also pointed to mending relationships as an example. “It could be a relationship that you said you were going to let go and y’all had some beef, a family member or something. Just reach out one more time. Just do something, keep doing the little things and you watch it process for you.”

Davis closed by tying the idea back to the verse that started it all. “Once you get to that dream, that dream is fulfilled,” Davis said. “It’s a tree of life. And that immense joy that comes from it, the same way that adversity was weighing you down, that joy lifts you up.”
