Dianna Russini Weighs Comeback After Vrabel Controversy Forced Her Out of The Athletic

Former NFL reporter Dianna Russini has hired crisis publicist Melissa Nathan as she explores a return to media, according to the New York Post, months after resigning from The Athletic in April amid leaks about her private relationship with New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel.

Russini has not made a public statement since her resignation. The controversy intensified when TMZ reported it had obtained records from a private boating trip involving Russini and Vrabel six years earlier, months before she gave birth to her first child.

Russini covered the NFL professionally for more than two decades before stepping down. The core issue, as critics have framed it, is not that anyone was harmed but that she failed to disclose a close personal relationship with a coach she was covering, a violation of a basic journalistic standard.

That has raised questions about whether traditional newsrooms would hire her back into an NFL reporting role, since any major story she broke could draw scrutiny over how she obtained the information, and sources might be more hesitant to talk to her going forward.

Some in the industry believe she could still find work, just not necessarily as a beat reporter. Fantasy football analyst Matthew Berry told OutKick in August he would “consider” signing Russini as an analyst for his company, Fantasy Life. Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy has also expressed interest in bringing her on as a personality.

Whether Russini could sustain interest as a media personality beyond initial curiosity about the Vrabel story remains an open question. The shift from traditional sports journalism to independent digital media has had mixed results industry-wide: figures like Berry, Shannon Sharpe, Jason Whitlock and Josh Pate have built large audiences outside legacy outlets, while others, including Skip Bayless, Bomani Jones and Cari Champion, have struggled to maintain the relevance they had in more prominent roles.

Russini’s situation differs in one key way — none of those figures had to rebuild their public image after questions were raised about the nature of their relationship with a public figure they covered.
