A heated exchange between Las Vegas Aces star A’ja Wilson and a fan at a Fever home game in Indianapolis nearly turned into a second confrontation when two former WNBA players tried to confront the same spectator, and one of them had to be escorted out of the arena by security.
The incident began after a fan called out Wilson for a foul on Fever guard Sophie Cunningham. Wilson left the playing floor and walked to the second row of courtside seats to confront the fan directly. A nearby spectator said the fan had told Wilson, “It (the foul) is on you.”
Wilson was given a technical foul for leaving the floor to confront the fan but was not ejected.
The Indiana Fever released a statement saying the fan had not violated any rules and was not removed from the arena.
“Following a report of a comment directed toward a player, arena security spoke with the fan involved and witnesses,” the Fever said. “Security determined there was no violation of the Fan Code of Conduct; the fan was not removed from the arena. We consider the matter closed.”
After the confrontation, former Wilson teammate Sydney Colson tried to approach the same fan and had to be escorted out of the building by stadium security. She was heard saying, “Who do you think you are? Bitch, who the f*ck do you think you are?”
Another former teammate, Theresa Plaisance, also directed comments at the fan, calling him a “little bitch boy.”
Both Colson and Plaisance were wearing microphones at the time as part of Amazon’s WNBA on Prime broadcast coverage.
Speaking after the game, Wilson defended her reaction to the fan’s comment.
“If I see a man come at me, taking steps toward me and pointing at me, I don’t give a damn what you said. I don’t give a damn how you said it, the tone, that is unacceptable,” Wilson said. “You don’t know me to step toward me and point at me. I’m not for that s–t at all. … That there is unacceptable. How he gets back in the game because they said he didn’t do anything; of course he did.”
