Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN-05) posted her first public statement this week since federal agents searched her Minneapolis home on Oct. 12, an operation during which reports say agents seized her phone, laptops and passport.
Omar, whose district covers much of Hennepin County, is facing multiple federal inquiries, including investigations into immigration paperwork and financial disclosures. Several subpoenas have also reportedly been issued, including to relatives.
The congresswoman had not appeared publicly in the days following the raid. She did not attend a rally held in her support on Oct. 12. Her husband was seen by reporters during that period; when asked about rumors that she had left the country, he responded sharply to the question.
On Thursday, Omar posted a statement addressing the situation for the first time:
Thank you to everyone who stood with me over the years. It’s been a scary journey but I have always been grounded in my work and ability to provide exemplary service to my constituents. Trump and his administration have been after me since I arrived in Congress. I have always stood up to him and that will never change. The pedophile protector will never silence me.
Omar restricted replies on the post, limiting public responses to her statement. One reply that remained visible questioned the decision, asking why comments were turned off and whether that amounted to silencing constituents.
The raid followed a judge’s decision to sign off on a search warrant for Omar’s residence. Investigations into her affairs reportedly began prior to the current administration, with questions said to have also been examined under the Biden administration.
Omar has previously addressed scrutiny of her conduct directly. In past remarks that have resurfaced amid the current investigations, she said: “Please investigate all you want… not like I’m above the law.”
No charges have been announced in connection with the searches or subpoenas as of this report.
