Country music veteran Wynonna Judd has weighed in on comments made by Kacey Musgraves during a concert in Texas earlier this week, after Musgraves used Columbus Day to call Christopher Columbus “lame” and “a loser” in front of the crowd.
Musgraves told the audience, “Obviously f— Columbus. Literally the lamest person to probably ever exist. Like for real. What a loser.” The remarks drew both support and criticism online.
Judd addressed the controversy during an appearance on “Tomi Lahren is Fearless.” Asked about Musgraves’ comments, Judd said, “She has the right to do that. But that doesn’t mean it’s the right thing.”
Judd said she tries to avoid turning her own shows into political platforms. “I never hear from my fans, ‘Hey, would you come out and sing “Grandpa” and tell me what your political view is,'” she said. “My job is to be an entertaining person.”
She added, “My grandmother would’ve had a fit.”
Judd said she often thinks of fellow country star Dolly Parton when deciding how much to share about her political views, preferring to let her actions do the talking. One cause she’s long supported is helping military service members, and she said it bothers her when that support gets mistaken for a political statement.
“I didn’t come here to talk about politics, I came to talk about music,” Judd said. “It’s nobody’s business what I try to do in my private life.”
Still, she wanted to make her own position clear. “I’m a patriot,” Judd said. “I support my servicemen. My son is a deputy. And I am for America. Period.”
Judd said that when she performs, she makes a point of acknowledging the flag, explaining that her love of country comes before any political opinion. “We live in the greatest country in the world,” she said. “If it was President Biden, I would support him. Because he’s the freaking president.”
