United Pilot Facing Grounding Over 8647 Threat To Trump

United Airlines is facing questions after a pilot reportedly changed his Facebook cover to the “8647,” a symbol tied to calls for killing President Trump, and an investigation followed.

A pilot identified as Matt Doogen reportedly updated his Facebook cover photo to the “8647,” which many recognize as shorthand for violence against President Trump. That action triggered scrutiny and prompted United to look into the matter, with reports saying he was pulled from a scheduled trip. The situation touches on safety, free speech, and how companies police employee conduct.

We’re sure that Trump supporters fly United. This writer flew United when she traveled to Hawaii in 2024, ironically the day of the first assassination attempt in Butler, PA, and incidents like this raise real questions about passenger treatment and workplace judgment. Airline employees hold authority over movement and access, so what they signal publicly matters to customers and to security.

Matt Doogen is named in reports as the pilot, and his Facebook header is the flashpoint. The symbol “8647,” is widely understood and has been connected to violent rhetoric aimed at President Trump, and that association is what made the social media change impossible to ignore. It’s not merely tasteless; it’s threatening when tied to someone with control over a cabin and crew.

Observers point out an obvious double standard in enforcement. Democrats once successfully pushed for consequences over costumes and mockery, like when a rodeo clown was fired for wearing an Obama mask, and GOP staffers have lost jobs for criticizing the appearance of a president’s child. That inconsistency makes people rightfully skeptical about how companies apply discipline depending on politics.

This makes us very uncomfortable. A pilot who openly signals hostility toward a large segment of the traveling public creates a trust problem for passengers who expect neutral, professional service. From a Republican viewpoint, this is about equal treatment and safety checks, not about muzzling a private citizen for an opinion.

What’s to stop Doogen from removing a Trump supporter from his flight? Nothing. If a crew member decides to act on personal bias, passengers could face unfair treatment or worse, and airlines have to be clear about the standards they enforce. That is precisely why swift and transparent action matters when employees cross the line from speech to intimidation.

Libs of TikTok reported last night that United was investigating Doogen and had removed him from a trip. Independent reporting and social amplification forced the carrier to respond quickly, showing how scrutiny can prompt action even before a formal outcome is announced. We’ll see what happens, but the public wants accountability and clarity.

Public safety aside, there’s a reputational cost to allowing provocative symbols from personnel in prominent roles. Customers notice who operates their flights, and a pattern of tolerated partisan hostility would push travelers to rethink loyalty. United, like any company, must weigh employee rights against the duty to protect and reassure customers of impartial treatment onboard.

This is accurate: officials, unions, and companies all have to strike a balance between free expression and maintaining a safe, impartial environment for the public. Republicans emphasize that rules should be enforced evenly and without political favoritism, because fairness maintains trust. If actions carry consequences, those consequences must be applied across the board regardless of the political view involved.

Social media is where workplace missteps now play out instantly, and airlines are among the industries most exposed. Customers expect pilots and crew to model professionalism, and when that expectation is violated it becomes a security and brand problem at once. Firms that address misconduct transparently protect both passengers and their own reputation.

Editor’s Note: The 2026 Midterms will determine the fate of President Trump’s America First agenda. Republicans must maintain control of both chambers of Congress.
