Texas Democrat James Talarico Backpedals On Trans, Gun Positions

James Talarico is trying to shed his progressive record by recasting himself as a moderate, but his voting history and past statements tell a different story.

James Talarico, the Democratic nominee for the U.S. Senate from Texas, used a recent interview to recast his image and distance himself from positions he once championed. The tone was one of retrenchment, an attempt to sound like a sensible alternative for Texas voters. The substance, though, remains rooted in a long record from his time in the Texas House.

On a podcast with life-long Democrat lawyer Dan Cogdell, Talarico worked to separate himself from policies he backed while in office. He claimed opposition to “gender reassignment” surgeries for minors, a stance that contrasts with his legislative choices. Texas voters might recall his viral remarks about loving trans children, but the roll call shows he was one of 56 Democrats who voted against a 2023 bill meant to prohibit transition surgeries for minors and ban taxpayer funding for those procedures; Talarico went as far as to “the most dangerous bill that’s being heard on this floor this session.”

Talarico also told the interviewer he “is a believer in the Second Amendment.” That phrasing sits oddly next to earlier proposals that leaned toward gun restrictions commonly opposed in Texas, including calls for universal background checks and limits on purchasing semi-automatic rifles. Those policy positions make his recent rhetoric feel like a strategic pivot aimed at calmer voters rather than a genuine change of outlook.

When it comes to immigration, Talarico tried to present himself as a “border security Democrat,” yet his policy proposals paint a different picture. His campaign previously pushed for amnesty programs for illegal immigrants who have been in the country awhile and a path to citizenship for those who marry U.S. citizens. He even endorsed measures that critics call concessions to open-border advocates, including restrictions on ICE practices that would limit enforcement flexibility.

Those earlier positions are consistent with public comments going back years, including a 2019 critique that even Barack Obama’s immigration policy was too extreme and statements supporting the idea of defunding ICE. Those remarks, and the policies he’s backed, make it hard to accept the new branding as anything more than political spin. Voters looking for clarity on enforcement and border control have reason to be skeptical.

Energy and education are other areas where Talarico’s past work conflicts with his recent claims. He now says Texas should protect its oil and gas industry, which sounds like a nod to mainstream state priorities. Yet he once advanced proposals to mandate “climate change lessons” in public schools and supported a Green New Deal style proposal aimed to to 10 percent of 1990 levels by the year 2050, moves that appeal to environmental activists more than Texas energy workers.

The interview opened with a bit of theater—Talarico ate barbecue on camera in an effort to fend off critiques about veganism and cultural fit. That visual played to Texas identity, but optics do not erase the legislative record voters will examine. He will face Republican nominee Ken Paxton in the general election in November, and that matchup will put these contrasts in sharp relief for the electorate.
