Clarence Thomas Defends Court, Rebukes Liberal Reporter On Hill

Justice Clarence Thomas brushed off a curious reporter on the Hill as the Supreme Court cleared its docket ahead of major decisions, and his short, direct answers left critics asking more about tone than substance.

The Court has been busy clearing its schedule while several big cases loom, including disputes over transgender athletes, campaign finance, and birthright citizenship. On Monday the Court released another round of rulings and left conservatives frustrated by one result: the justices declined to strike down a Mississippi law that allows accepting mail-in ballots five days after Election Day, as long as they are properly postmarked. That decision fed already-heated debates about election rules and judicial willingness to intervene.

Justice Clarence Thomas, long a steady presence on the bench’s conservative side, was seen on Capitol Hill and drew attention from reporters. A correspondent from MS Now pressed him with a string of questions that seemed designed to needle rather than inform. The exchange was brief, but it crystallized how the media treats conservative justices when they appear in public.

I mean, are these serious questions? Of course, he’s not going to leak the Court’s opinions; he’s not a liberal. Thomas handled these questions perfectly. His answers were short, polite, and entirely on point, which is exactly what you want from a justice who must preserve institutional integrity while living under constant public scrutiny.

Reporter: “Who were meeting with?”

Justice Thomas: “Oh, nobody.”

Reporter: “So what are you doing up here?”

Justice Thomas: “Just walking.”

Reporter: “Do you want to give us a sneak peak of SCOTUS decisions?”

Justice Thomas: “Nope.”

The interaction made headlines because it was short and a little awkward, not because it concealed some grand conspiracy. Reporters pushed, he deflected, and the moment ended. Observers on both sides read tone into a few words; that’s the nature of political theater on the Hill.

There was some curiosity about who the justice might have been meeting with, but the simple answer is there wasn’t anything dramatic to report. It did spark some intrigue about whom he was meeting. There is no plot here, liberal media.

Move on.
