Senior officials say a short-term agreement could be announced as soon as Wednesday to keep traffic moving through the Strait of Hormuz, the chokepoint that carries a huge share of the world’s oil shipments. The proposal reportedly calls for a 60-day toll-free period for ships moving between Oman and Iran, a move aimed at reducing immediate tensions and protecting commerce.
The talks follow a volatile stretch in which military strikes were reportedly on the table and then put on hold. President Donald Trump cancelled the possibility of a major attack over the weekend, a decision his supporters praise as measured strength backed by firm negotiating posture.
“They called me and they said, ‘Please don’t attack, we’ll make a deal.’ That’s the real truth and everyone knows it, and who wouldn’t call?” Trump said in the Oval Office earlier this week, framing the pause as leverage that produced diplomatic movement. That account underscores how pressure can force adversaries to the table without launching full-scale military action.
Diplomacy here appears transactional and short-term: open the waterway, protect shipping, then use the breathing room to pursue tougher, longer-term constraints on Iran. With or without an agreement, I am determined, and we are all determined to do whatever is necessary to ensure our security and our future,” he said, laying down a hard boundary that any arrangement must not cross. That insistence reflects a core Republican view: alliances and deterrence must remain robust while diplomacy proceeds.
Oman’s reported role as an intermediary highlights the value of capable regional partners who can broker pauses without rewarding bad behavior permanently. A toll-free window would be a pragmatic, limited step to protect global commerce and buy time for follow-up talks that demand harder restraints on Iran’s provocations.
For Republicans, the test of any short-term deal will be clear metrics and enforceable consequences if Iran backslides. Temporary agreements that reduce immediate risks are sensible, but they must be accompanied by a plan that strengthens American security, protects allies, and prevents Tehran from using pauses to regroup or expand its malign influence.
