Crowley Prioritizes Act 10 Repeal, Threatens $2.1 Billion Burden

Repealing Act 10 would hit Wisconsin wallets hard, and David Crowley’s top priority is to roll it back — a move critics say would raise taxes, squeeze local budgets, and make life more expensive for residents across the state.

The math on repealing Act 10 is brutal: estimates put the price tag at a minimum of $2.1 billion in new annual taxes. That gap would force local governments and school districts to scramble for revenue or cut services. Yet the Crowley campaign has been quiet on how they’d pay for this sweeping reversal.

When business taxes are forced to go up, thanks to the repeal of Act 10, there won’t be job opportunities at all, let alone better ones. Affordable housing would take a direct hit as property taxes and rents rise to cover the new burden. Small businesses and middle-class families would be left holding the bag as costs climb and investment moves elsewhere.

Because Crowley himself said his “number one” priority is repealing Act 10. Saying it out loud is one thing; explaining the fallout and the trade-offs is another. Voters deserve clarity on whether they want higher taxes and fewer opportunities in exchange for the changes he’s proposing.

Republican leaders like Tom Tiffany have pressed the question, calling out the lack of explanation from Crowley’s allies and campaign surrogates. That line of questioning isn’t partisan theater — it’s about accountability and transparency on fiscal policy. If a candidate won’t own the consequences of their stated priority, voters should be skeptical.

Critics also point to Crowley’s record running Milwaukee County as evidence that promises won’t match outcomes. During his tenure, residents saw higher property and sales taxes in the county. That track record is exactly why people worry what statewide power under his agenda would mean for taxes across Wisconsin.

We already know local governments and school districts would be crushed by higher costs. School systems alone face roughly $1.6 billion in extra annual obligations under a repeal scenario. That translates into larger class sizes, lower teacher pay in real terms, cuts to programs families rely on, and upward pressure on property tax bills.

He did raise property taxes and the sales tax, so we are the highest-taxed county in the state. Folks in Milwaukee saw those increases firsthand, and skeptics argue the same patterns would spread if Crowley pushes his statewide agenda. For voters watching their budgets, that record matters more than campaign rhetoric.

Where’s the lie? The numbers are straightforward: higher state and local costs, fewer business incentives, and the need to shift taxes onto homeowners and renters. That is not speculation; it is the direct consequence of dismantling reforms that kept public budgets under tighter control.

There’s a basic choice here: protect the fiscal reforms that helped stabilize Wisconsin’s finances, or accept higher taxes and the cuts or service reductions that will follow. Crowley has framed his priorities as pro-worker and pro-community, but the fiscal mechanics of repealing Act 10 tell a different story. Voters should weigh that gap between promise and price carefully.

Editor’s Note: The 2026 Midterms will determine the fate of President Trump’s America First agenda. Republicans must maintain control of both chambers of Congress.
