The U.S. Supreme Court has blocked a federal appeals court decision that would have forced Missouri to switch congressional maps just weeks before the November election, ensuring the state’s 2022 map remains in place.
In a per curiam order issued late Friday afternoon, the Court granted an emergency stay requested by People Not Politicians and Richard von Glahn. The order blocks the 8th Circuit’s September 21 ruling and a permanent injunction entered afterward by Chief Judge Stephen Clark that would have required Missouri to use its newer 2025 congressional map.
The decision marks the third time the Supreme Court has weighed in on the dispute over which map Missouri should use this election cycle. On September 8, Justice Brett Kavanaugh declined to stay a Missouri Supreme Court ruling requiring use of the 2022 map.
