Charlie Kirk’s mother, Kathryn Kirk, has broken months of public silence to reject claims of a rift between her family and Erika Kirk, telling Vanity Fair that the loss of her son has instead drawn the two women closer together.
“We were 100% behind her,” Kathryn Kirk said in the interview, pushing back on speculation that Charlie’s parents blame his widow for his death or are locked in a dispute with her over his will and the future of Turning Point USA.
“Erika and I have, through the trauma, grown closer,” she said. “We knew Charlie in a way that no one else did. We can look at each other’s eyes, and we know the depth of our despair.”
Vanity Fair reported that Kathryn had avoided speaking with journalists until now, preferring to remain a private citizen. Her silence, the magazine noted, had become fodder for online conspiracy theories about the family’s relationship with Erika. Kathryn was described as crying during the interview as she talked about how upset her son would be to see the way his wife has been treated on social media.
She also recalled how quickly media attention descended after the shooting, saying a TMZ reporter “called me even before I talked to my daughter. Before I was running the car.”
Plans for the future, cut short
The Vanity Fair profile detailed preparations Charlie and Erika Kirk were making for their family’s future amid what the magazine described as escalating death threats. Doug DeGroote, a Turning Point USA board member who manages the couple’s personal finances, told the outlet they had been working on a will and had planned to sign the paperwork at his office the Monday after Charlie was killed.
The night before his death, Charlie discussed security recommendations with Erika and their pastor, including bulletproof glass shields and vests, according to the report. Board members, Erika and several close allies told Vanity Fair that Charlie had made clear he wanted his wife to lead Turning Point USA if anything happened to him.
Kathryn said her son had kept those conversations from his parents “because it would just go right into our fears.” A former Turning Point employee told the outlet that Erika’s selection to succeed her husband made sense because “she knew him more than anyone.”

Erika Kirk also described to Vanity Fair the anguish of watching surveillance footage of the shooting during a September preliminary hearing in the case against Tyler Robinson. “Don’t do it. Don’t you dare do it. It’s not too late,” she recalled silently pleading as she watched the man on screen. She gripped Kathryn’s arm and cried out as the footage showed Robinson taking position for the shot.
Erika also recounted insisting on seeing her husband’s body at the Utah hospital after a doctor advised against it. “I looked back at him and said, ‘With all due respect, I want to see what they did to my husband. I didn’t get a kiss goodbye this morning. I just want to kiss my husband,'” she told the magazine. Hospital staff removed tubes from Charlie’s mouth, wrapped his neck and cleared away blood before she was allowed to see him, according to the outlet.
“I’ll never be able to put it into words,” Erika said. “But Charlie had a smirk. It wasn’t sad.”
