Elon Musk says that starting next year, he will give one SpaceX share to every child in the United States.
“Next year, I will give one of my SpaceX shares to every kid in America,” Musk wrote on X. “This will be the first of many.”
SpaceX shares are currently trading at roughly $150 apiece. With an estimated 75 million children in the country, fulfilling the pledge would require Musk to part with about 75 million shares out of the more than four billion he owns. Musk’s net worth, tied closely to SpaceX and his other holdings, is currently estimated around a trillion dollars, making him the wealthiest person in the world.
The announcement comes on the heels of the recently launched Trump Accounts program, which is designed to get children invested early in the mechanics of compound interest within the free-market system.
Commentary following the announcement has framed the SpaceX share giveaway as a complement to that effort, suggesting it could expose a large number of children to how stock ownership and investing work from a young age.
No further details have been released on exactly how the share distribution would work, when in the coming year it would begin, or whether there are eligibility requirements beyond being a child in America. Musk’s post did not elaborate beyond the single statement.
