Georgia Gas Station Friendship Leads Woman to Adopt Coworker's Baby

A daily stop at a Georgia gas station turned into a lifelong family bond after D’Amber Davis learned the woman behind the register couldn’t care for the baby she was expecting.

Davis had made a habit of visiting the same gas station every day, where she got to know cashier Katelyn Sparks, according to a report from WMAZ. The two regularly talked during Davis’s visits, but one day Davis noticed Sparks was pregnant. Sparks told her she wouldn’t be able to raise the baby.

Davis had long felt drawn to adoption but had planned to wait until she finished school and was financially ready before pursuing it. That changed the moment she heard about Sparks’s situation.

“In my mind I’m just like, instantly, ‘I got to get this baby. Not knowing nothing. I just know I got to get this baby,'” Davis said.

Her own son helped seal the decision. “My son looked at me and he said, ‘Mama, we gotta get that baby.’ And there was confirmation,” Davis recalled.

Sparks agreed to let Davis adopt her baby, and Davis made sure Sparks had access to the medical care she needed throughout the rest of the pregnancy. Baby Nolan was born soon after.

“I thought he needed me, but I really needed him. I love my kids to death, but I also love Nolan, and I don’t love him any different. He’s my own. He’s my son. He’s my life. He’s my world,” Davis said.

Footage of the two mothers together shows them spending time with their children as one extended family. “We’re pretty much like family, for real,” Davis said.

The adoption has also mended family relationships in Sparks’s own life, and she now calls Davis her “big sister.” Davis said Nolan will always know who his biological mother is.

According to the Adoption Network, roughly 4.5 million adopted children live across the United States.
