Matthew Perry’s brother-in-law, musician David Bowick, broke a long public silence about the actor’s 2023 death in a Facebook post shared Saturday, just days before a new Netflix documentary on Perry’s life is set to premiere.
Bowick, who married Perry’s sister Mia Perry Bowick in August 2023, wrote that he contributed music to the three-part Netflix docuseries “The One About Matthew Perry,” which debuts Tuesday. “I’m in it very briefly, but my lovely wife is in it quite a bit,” he wrote, adding that he had “never really talked much about Matthew publicly.”
“He was someone the whole world felt like they knew, but to me, he was just my brother,” Bowick wrote. “He always started our interactions with ‘Hey, brother’ and I always loved that.”
Alongside the post, Bowick shared a wedding photo showing himself and Mia standing with Perry and his late sister Zoe, who died last month at age 46. “Now they’re both gone,” Bowick wrote. “It’s a strange thing to watch the world remember someone while you’re still trying to figure out how to live without the people you remember them with.”
“I don’t have anything particularly profound to say. I just wanted to share this picture of two people I wish were still here. I miss you both so much.”
Bowick said he was asked to write music for the documentary and called it meaningful “to be able to contribute a small piece to telling his story.”
Perry, best known for playing Chandler Bing on “Friends,” was found dead in his hot tub on Oct. 28, 2023, at age 54. A coroner determined he died from the “acute effects of ketamine,” along with drowning, coronary artery disease and the effects of buprenorphine.
In 2024, federal prosecutors charged five people with conspiracy and distribution of ketamine in connection with Perry’s death. Three of them — Perry’s assistant Kenneth Iwamasa, drug counselor Erik Fleming and Dr. Mark Chavez — have pleaded guilty.
“The One About Matthew Perry” premieres Tuesday on Netflix.
