Eagles, Commanders Meet on Sunday Night With Both Teams Reeling

The Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Commanders meet Sunday night in a primetime NFC East matchup that pits two teams struggling through rough stretches of the season.

Philadelphia has lost five games in a row and will be without quarterback Jalen Hurts, who is out for the season. The team’s run defense has also struggled, and the Eagles recorded zero sacks, quarterback hits or tackles for loss in Monday’s 38-21 loss to Dallas.

Washington, meanwhile, has dealt with pre-snap penalties, slow offensive execution and trouble getting off the field on third down during a four-game losing streak under quarterback Jayden Daniels. Despite the losses, Daniels has produced 21.5 points per game over that span, throwing for seven total touchdowns without an interception. Coach Dan Quinn remains in his position.

Bookmakers have made the Eagles 5.5-point underdogs for Sunday’s game, with the total set at 40 points. Washington is coming off its bye week and will play at home, while Philadelphia is on a short week following its Monday night loss.

The Eagles enter the game with several players carrying questionable designations, including running back Saquon Barkley, wide receiver DeVonta Smith and wide receiver Dontayvion Wicks. Washington’s run defense ranks 31st in the league in opponent rushing rate, which could create opportunities for Philadelphia’s backfield regardless of Barkley’s status.

Quarterback Tanner McKee, filling in for Hurts, has thrown for 426 yards over his last two starts. Washington’s defense has allowed 254 passing yards per game, a 105.0 opposing passer rating, and touchdowns on 81.8 percent of opponents’ red-zone trips this season.

Eight of the last ten meetings between the two NFC East rivals have gone over the posted point total.
