Chynna Phillips Says She Nearly Called a Lawyer Before Billy Baldwin Worked to Save Their Marriage

Singer Chynna Phillips says there were moments when she was ready to end her more than three-decade marriage to actor Billy Baldwin, telling Fox News Digital she once considered calling a lawyer to walk away.

Phillips, best known for her work with Wilson Phillips, spoke candidly about the state of her marriage during an interview at the Chiller Theatre Expo in New Jersey.

“Billy and I have had some really treacherous times in our marriage, and there were times when I was going to throw in the towel and call a lawyer,” Phillips said. “If we’re being completely transparent here, there were times where I was just thinking to myself, I can’t do this anymore.”

What kept her from leaving, she said, was watching her husband commit to change.

“But then when I saw that he was actually willing to work on the relationship in a very intentional way, the two of us were able to make some changes that were permanent,” she said.

Phillips said the couple focused on making those changes stick rather than slipping back into old habits after a short-lived improvement. “We have been working very, very hard,” she said.

Phillips and Baldwin married in September 1995 and have three adult children together: Jameson, Vance and Brooke. Their relationship has drawn public attention in recent years as the two have discussed living apart at different times.

In October, Phillips said in an Instagram video that she and Baldwin had moved into separate houses while they continued working through their issues. “Literally our marriage was going down like the Titanic, and Billy moved 50 yards away from me in the guest house and so far, so good,” she said. “It’s kind of working. I’m not really sure what’s going to come of it but hey, I’m not fighting it.”

The couple had also lived separately in 2024, with Phillips based in Santa Barbara and Baldwin in Beverly Hills, before reuniting under one roof and later deciding to separate their living arrangements again.

A New Series Pulls Back the Curtain

Phillips and Baldwin are set to release a new YouTube series, “Holding On: Billy and Chynna,” debuting Nov. 17. Phillips described the show as an honest look at the realities of married life.

“It really depicts marriage, the ups, the downs, it’s very raw, it’s very real, it is very funny, and it’s super engaging in my opinion,” she said. “I’m a little biased, but…”

A teaser posted on Instagram shows the couple sparring over old frustrations. “You can’t admit when you’re wrong. That’s just it,” Baldwin tells Phillips. She fires back, “You can’t either!” In another clip, Baldwin recalls Phillips telling him she wanted to spend her life with him, but wanted to spend it “adjacent.”

Family and Faith

Phillips also spoke about her relationship with her sisters, Mackenzie and Bijou Phillips, daughters of the late Mamas & the Papas musician John Phillips. She said the siblings weren’t close growing up but have since become inseparable.

“It’s interesting because we didn’t grow up together,” Phillips said. “Bijou and Mackenzie spent a lot more time together than I did with them. I was basically raised as an only child, but as I matured and grew older, I reached out more to them, and we all started spending more time together and now we’re inseparable.”

She added that the sisters “trust each other implicitly” despite the usual sibling ups and downs, crediting their shared father for a strong bond.

Faith is a quieter but steady presence in her life, Phillips said, even though she doesn’t discuss it often with her sisters. “I don’t really talk about my faith too much with my sisters, but they know that I love the Lord,” she said. “So I just kind of pray for them, and I know that they’re in the Jesus waiting room.”

These days, with her children grown, Phillips says she’s settled into a quieter routine in Santa Barbara, splitting her time between cooking, walking and caring for her two dogs, Hula and Hoops. “I just love being at home and cooking. And I love taking long naps and walks and hanging out with Billy,” she said.
